Taking Our Small Apartment Bathroom From Drab to Fab
Hey, ya’ll! This one is a throwback!
I want to take us back to our first bathroom renovation—the one that set the tone for all the others on the blog.
Back when we lived in our old apartment, we decided to do a gut renovation to our one and only bathroom. It was a dated little space with some foundational issues, including a lack of ventilation and a leaky faucet that generated a ton of mildew and was starting to impact our neighbors below.
The Renovation
We were very new to the home renovation process, but despite our lack of experience, we were eager to begin. My first step was to seek inspiration from Houzz, where I found several contractors. Ultimately, I chose Attention to Detail Home Improvement.
The project took about a month, primarily due to delays with some of our ordered materials, but typically, these projects only take 2-3 weeks.
Once the walls were stripped bare, unexpected issues, like problems with our sink, came up but were quickly resolved. Everything else was going well until Home Depot lost our tub and delayed the process for a few weeks. I also mistakenly ordered the wrong wall tile and did not have enough floor tile, so I had to buy more. The problem with marble tile is that every batch has a slight variation, so I had some mitchmatched spots once it was installed.
The Reveal
Despite the challenges, we were very happy with the result. The new bathroom was brighter, airy, and more functional.
The vanity was the perfect size for the space.
I chose gold fixtures from Kohler. The gold is so unique and different from any other brand.
For the shower/tub, I chose a hinged frameless door to maintain the open feel. I also replaced the shade in the shower with frosting on the glass to allow more light into the space.
This bathroom remodel is one for the history books. While it came with its fair share of surprises, the outcome was worth it. Renovating this bathroom added so much equity to our house, and it was a feature everybody loved when we put it up for sale.
I have to say, I miss this little space, but I’m glad I now have the experience and ability to replicate this a few times in our new home.
